Photo: Joao MorgadoThe Pousada de Cascais is set within the walls of the historical 16th century Citadel of Cascais fortress, one of the military forts built to defend the coast and entrance of the Tagus river. The fortress was acquired by the Cascais municipality for cultural and tourism purposes in 2003 and has now been fully converted to a luxury hotel.

The restoration and conversion by Gonçalo Byrne, Joao Gois and David Sinclair respects the heritage value of the site and the natural beauty of the surroundings.

It is a place where ancient meets modern with many of the rooms dramatically set into the former barracks, making each space a different experience.

Rising above the fortress the new building, covered with a corten steel grid, has a feeling of transparency and lightness in contrast to the massive fortress walls. The rooms in the new building have spectacular views of the sea or of the inner courtyard.

The Pousada has 108 rooms and 18 suites.
