LAB architecture studio has been selected as the winner of the design competition for the Newcastle Region Art Gallery.
The redevelopment of the existing building will triple the existing gallery space and also include a new theater, a lounge area, educational, research and library spaces, and a shop and café facing Darby Street.

The facade will be clad with special black oxidized stainless steel panels that will create a unique image through glowing light at night.

This is LAB’s first major building commission in Australia since the completion of Federation Square almost four years ago.
Peter Davidson, a director of LAB architecture studio, was born in Newcastle and says “the project provides an opportunity to create a contemporary building of national significance which will contribute to Newcastle’s vibrant arts community.”
