Nearing completion
Antoine Predock
Tacoma Art Museum

Tacoma, Washington

"The museum will be a journey encounter with the art and the place at the same time - an immersion. Even those who pass by cars or walking will catch a glimpse of the museum's inner workings."
Antoine Predock

With approximately 12,000 square feet of exhibition space, the new museum building is nearly double TAM's existing museum space. The new building will also feature an 8,046-square-foot Education Wing for children, adults and seniors with a studio, resource center and ArtWORKS for art making as well as an event space, expanded museum store and a cafŽ.

Predock did not want to inflict a style  but wanted the construction of the building to relate to the essential fabric of the Northwest - materials of stone, wood and glass intertwined with the urban mosaic of Tacoma - with the exterior of the building wrapped in a stainless steel "skin" to pick up on the "industrial vernacular" of the nearby port area and bridges.

The five galleries will be connected by a ramp that wraps around a central Mist Moss Garden, enclosed in mirrored glass, allowing visitors to gradually move from street level to the second floor.
The reflective glass, along with natural light from carefully placed windows, will offer glimpses of  the Northwest landscape and art as visitors move upwards through the space.

Glass walls in the main entry and on the top floor will have sweeping views of the mountains and  the adjacent Romanesque dome of Union Station; the first building to be restored in the Downtown Tacoma Restoration project.

Daylight will enter into the 30 foot tall Main Gallery space through a long narrow opening at floor level.

The new Tacoma Art Museum will open to the public in May 2003.
