Located on one of the last open sites on the beautiful and historic Ann Arbor campus, the expansion, combined with the renovation of UMMA’s existing facility in Alumni Memorial Hall, promises to transform the Museum into a new kind of institution for formal and informal learning.

The extension consists of three wings, organized in a T shape and pushed back from the existing Museum facility. Only one surface, at the end of the T, actually touches the wall of Alumni Memorial Hall.
The scheme provides the extension with three outdoor courts, two entry courts, and a sculpture/event court, and more than doubles the current facilities.

The building will be clad in Wisconsin limestone with curtain walls of translucent glass, providing views of the activity in the building.
Structurally, the extension is built of immense cantilevers, with only three bearing points.

Entering the building visitors will find a dramatic, triple-height space where the three wings of the new building intersect. From any of the gallery wings, it will be possible to see across that core space into the other two wings, so that visitors will sense how the complexities of the space are resolved.
For the curators, the interior scheme will provide a multitude of possibilities for installations.

“The student’s habitual route to and from campus runs through the site of the expansion. We did not want to drop a bulky, enclosed object onto that space - nor did we want to do anything that would upstage Alumni Memorial Hall, which holds so much meaning for the University community. So we designed the extension to be as transparent as possible, with the entire ground floor left open to the public.”
