The Long Beach Museum of Art has developed an expansion plan to engage a wider audience as a multi-disciplinary cultural facility. To accomplish this transition, we performed a feasibility study that included program studies and relocation analysis. After we studied the program, budget and architectural implications of four sites, the board selected an addition and rehabilitation to the current facility located in an Arts and Crafts villa, on the palisades overlooking the ocean.

The master plan entails a new 12,800 square foot building housing galleries, a multi-purpose event space, art preparation, storage and the museum's entrance lobby. A covered walkway connects this new building with the century old museum house that will contain a cafe, bookstore, art education classrooms, video gallery and administrative offices.
The original carriage house will be relocated on the site behind the museum house and rehabilitated to accommodate the video collection, video production and editing facilities. The Carriage House will become the new Multi-Media Arts and Archive Center for the Long Beach Museum of Art.
A courtyard will separate the new and old structures to preserve the architectural integrity of each while creating an outdoor room for performances and events facing the harbor. A sculpture garden is planned for an adjacent park.
