On April 19th, the Icelandic host of the Kolonihaven exhibition, the Reykjavik Art Museum, will inaugurate their new headquarters in a converted warehouse space in the central section of Hafnarhusid (Harbour House), a 1930«s landmark building in the centre of Reykjavik. The new museum is designed by the Icelandic architecture firm Studio Granda, well known for its prize winning designs for Reykjavik City Hall (1988-92) and Supreme Court of Iceland (1993-96). It will include 1700 sqm. of gallery space for permanent and temporary art exhibitions, a multi-purpose assembly room, a library and a cafeteria overlooking Reykjavik Harbour. After 2000, one section of the museum will be devoted to the work of the Paris-based Icelandic artist Err—, who in 1989 donated over 2000 of his work to the City of Reykjavik.
Principal materials are concrete, white paint, hot rolled steel, black walnut and glass.
