It has been announced that American architect Michael Graves will receive the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal Award. The Gold Medal recognizes an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Michael Graves will be the 58th AIA Gold Medalist.
The AIA’s highest honor has been given to 57 architects since it was established in 1907. Among the awarded architects are Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Sir Norman Foster and to Frank Gehry in 1999. Thomas Jefferson was awarded the medal, posthumously, in 1993.
In recognition of their legacy to architecture, the name of each Gold Medal recipient is chiseled into the granite wall of honor in the lobby of the AIA headquarters in Washington.
