SAS Royal Hotel

Copenhagen, Denmark

This weekend we are celebrating the 40 year Anniversary of the SAS Royal Hotel, now The Radisson SAS Hotel, in Copenhagen.
Arne Jacobsen was one of the greatest Danish architects of the 20th Century.  His versatile talent won him both national and international acclaim.  Arne Jacobsen's first architectural milestone was when he won a design competition for the "House of the Future" in 1929 - two years after having graduated from the Royal Academy in Copenhagen.  This event marked the beginning of a long versatile career.  Arne Jacobsen mastered all elements in the architectural process, from the great lines to the minute details.  One of his professed ideas was that industrial production should be based on high-quality craftsmanship.  Arne Jacobsen was extremely productive and has created history in almost all areas of architecture and design.

The restored "Royal Suite #606" is the only room in the hotel where everything from doorhandles to furniture and curtains is designed by Jacobsen.  It is worth a stay. I prefer the corner rooms on the high floor where you can sit in the bathtub and look out at the fireworks in Tivoli Garden.  There is still a lot of Jacobsen in all the rooms.

The world famous  "Egg" and "Swan" chairs were designed especially for the Royal Hotel by Arne Jacobsen.  They are placed in circles all around the Lobby.

In connection with the Anniversary there is a small Arne Jacobsen exhibition in the Baron's Room behind the Lobby organized  by Adm. Director Jan Kjær Nielsen and Lisbeth Söderberg.

At the exhibition Anne Marie Gregersen, journalist  from Berlingske Tidende, could not resist testing the "Giraf" with the original 40 year old green fabric.
