The Icelandic Embassy
Berlin, Germany
1999
Architect: Palmar Kristmundsson

The proposal is based on a very confident idea and the proposed use of materials and forms is convincing. The idea of a lighter main building facing the Inner Plaza, against the darker staircase by the lake, suits the plan of the whole site.
Although it is the opinion of the committee that the west side of the building could come closer to the copper-wall. The two types of natural stone, in contrast with each other, create a convincing interplay with the copper-wall.
The window layout of the reception and staircase is especially noteworthy and enhances the effect of the pond outside. The idea of the axis flooring with whale-bone in shingle had a good impact on the committee as an artistic and patriotic reference, as did the sheep-entrails in the window of the staircase.
The garden is well conceived and founded as a well of light to be enjoyed from the core of the building, it may also contribute to maintaining the homesickness of the employees. The planning of the proposal is especially well resolved, attractive and well lit spaces with good accessibility for all.
The possibility of enlargement of the embassy is within the proposal. It is the opinion of the committee, that this proposal can be a excellent representative of Iceland in Berlin as well as a good and lively place to work in.
