Reederei B. Rickmers announced that construction will begin on their new headquarters building located in the Eimsböttel neighborhood next to the the American Consulate building in Hamburg. The 2,000 square meter building designed by American architect Richard Meier has a sleek four story high curved glass fa?ade facing the Aussenalster lake. A double-height entry reception area occupies the ground floor along with office space. The second floor is comprised of a gallery and office space, with additional office space on the third floor. Executive offices are located on the sculptural top floor. Below grade, two basement floors contain parking and archival space. Extensive informal meeting areas, corridor spaces and outdoor decks in conjunction with open work spaces create an atmosphere that is more in the vein of a home/work typology rather than the strictly defined programmatic logic of conventional office space. In addition to providing new work space, the suspended platform gallery in the entry hall provides a display area for the B. Rickmers company to showcase their superb collection of scale ship models, portraying elements of their fleet. A cutaway portion of the arced north fa?ade reveals this suspended interior space to the passing automobile traffic, enlivening the building at all times of the day and evening. The building will be clad in white and transparent glass as well as white metal panels. Construction is scheduled for completion in November 2000. This building continues a long line of extraordinary buildings that Richard Meier has completed in Europe including the Museum fúr Kunsthandwerk in Frankfurt, the Ulm Stadthaus, the City Hall and Central Library in the Hague, Canal+ Television Headquarters in Paris and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art. Mr. Meier is the architect of the Getty Center in Los Angeles which opened to the public in 1997. He has received the highest honors in the field including the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, the Gold Medals of the American Institute of Architect and the Royal Institute of British Architects as well as the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association. He is the architect of the presitigious Church of the Year 2000 for the Vatican now under construction in Rome.
