Northern Light Cathedral
Alta, Norway

Danish architects schmidt hammer lassen K/S have, in collaboration with Norwegian Signatur Arkitekter A/S, won the invitational competition for the new Cathedral in Alta, Norway. The Cathedral will be the largest in northern Norway.

Situated north of the Polar Circle the new Alta Cathedral will reflect Alta’s status as an observation post for the northern light phenomena.

The Cathedral will rise in a dynamic movement towards the sky and towards the bell tower that dissolves and disappears.

The center of movement is the church room that, in contrast to the dynamic language of the exterior of the building, is experienced as a place for quiet and contemplation.

The 2100 square meter Cathedral building will contain an administrative part, meeting rooms and teaching facilities.

The identity of the Cathedral will also be expressed in the use of local materials; Alta tiles, copper and birch wood.

Client: Alta Municipality with the Alta Cathedral Planning Committee.
