In 1998, Gert Wingårdh won a competition to design a new main entrance building, a gateway to the University, and a 450 seat auditorium. The project also includes a Student League building containing a pub, café, reading room, conference and musical performance areas, and a gymnasium, as well as restoration of the original, 1950s Student League building.

The site is very tight, sandwiched between two registered landmark buildings designed by former Chalmers Deans of the Architecture. The 200 seat Palmstedtsalen and the gateway containing the boardroom and an administration wing, was designed by Jan Wallinder in the 1960s, and the Church, or Student League building, was designed by Melchior Wernstedt in the 1950s.
The Wingårdh team opted for two simple square slabs; one clad in brick towards the inner courtyard with the Student League main entrance and café, and one clad in slate, taking its cue from the slate clad gateway in the Wallinder building. The slabs are 18 and 15 meters with primary support columns 18 meters apart.

The Main Entrance Building, at the top of an ascending street leading from the city core to the University, is a white concrete frame from which a 7 meter high glass (the very limits of thermal glass) elevation is hung, supporting 3 meters of glass floor that also serves as an entrance canopy/ceiling. The first floor double height lobby area and the en bois structure of the main auditorium and conference rooms will be exposed through the large glass window.

The concrete columns, primary beams, and rib beams will be exposed and visible through the building and will, with their massiveness, act as a thermal equalizer, eliminating the need for air conditioning (the cavities between the ribs will be used for ductwork and covered by light birch ply panels).

The main focus of the layered building is the alley between the League Building and the main auditorium. Being in the center, the alley also serves as the main air circulation generator with air vents that open in the direction of the predominant wind.
Double and triple height spaces, large internal windows, and a lot of diagonal movement through orthogonal spaces will create a very dramatic environment.
