SOM To Build Wind Harnessing Tower
American firm of architects, engineers, interior designers and
planners, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill - otherwise known as SOM -
has this week unveiled a marvelous looking 500 meter tower that
when built in 2020 will become a new icon in Indonesia's capital
Jakarta. Built for the state-owned oil and gas firm Pertaminia, the
building will - somewhat contradicting it's owners business model -
host a wind funnel to capture wind energy for clean electrical
production. The site will also host a Mosque, energy plant, sports
fields and parade ground. Lets hope this fantastic looking building
Form4 Architecture impress in Taiwan
The San Francisco based Form4 Architecture have won the 2013 WAN Civic Buildings Competition for their futuristic looking city center design. With over 46 international entries for the 'Future Schemes' category Form4 impressed the judges with it's pod like masterplan which includes a huge vertical library and cylindrical museum.
This Week's Win
OMA Wins Development Project in Miami
In connection with this years Design Miami, it was revealed that OMA won a competition for a mid-rise residential development project in Coconut Grove, Miami. They beat harsh competition from Jean Nouvel and Diller Scofidio + Renfro among others.
OMA proposed six condominium corncob-like towers on a terraced site with space for a wide range of different functions. To ensure that the towers would not create a wall-like division of the area, their facades are translucent and porous.
now, OMA will get the chance to out-shine little brother BIG, who
recently won the bid to build a couple of twisting
towers at the site of the former Grand Hotel in
in Miami... Its not the most spectacular architectural marvel but
its got a lift for cars so who cares! Straight out of a hollywood
action, thriller, adventure movie this new apartment building will
host a car elevator enabling you to drive straight into your living
room! The 60 story building designed by Gil Dezer, a
condo magnet and Porsche Design Group has already sold most of the
apartments and some media outlets report that 22 'billionaires'
have already snapped up the best rooms! I wonder how my banged up
fiat punto would look in there!?
This Week's Video
Mirror City, directed, filmed and edited by Michael Shainblum, is a visual story through some of the great American cities: Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. It's a fascinating look at familiar scenery endlessly reflecting itself.
