Thom Mayne founded Morphosis with the aspiration to design and build work of humanity, intellectual rigor, and intuitive design intelligence. He has remained steadfast in his commitment to this vision of the practice of architcture as a collective enterprise since the inception of Morphosis in 1972.

Thom Mayne was awarded the Rome Prize in 1987. In 1992, he received the award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was inducted into the American Academy of Design. A few of the most significant projects include The Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center, the design for the Vienna Expo' 1992, the Golf Club at Chiba Prefecture, and the award winning master plan for the Spreebogen in Berlin.

While maintaining intense involvement in the international projects of his firm, Thom Mayne has also maintained a commitment to the education of young architects. In 1972 he, along with five others, founded the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) upon whose board he continues to serve. He is currently on the faculty at UCLA and has taught at Columbia, Harvard, and Yale. He frequently lectures at Universities and institutions around the world.
