Los Angeles

The former ALOHA swim school now serves as a residence for Josh Schweitzer, Mary Sue Milliken and their son, Declan. The large site is located in an area of Los Angeles characterized by an eclectic mix of commercial and residential developments. The complex is completely surrounded by a wall that shields the site from it's immediate surroundings - providing a peaceful oasis within a tough urban neighborhood.

The ALOHA is comprised of four separate structures; a living area, two bedroom pavilions and a studio. Dominating the bilevel site is a huge swimming pool. The circulation between these structures - outside and unprotected - celebrates the idyllic Southern California climate as well as the atypical estate - like nature of the site.

Each of the structures are examples of Schweitzer's investigations of form, color and texture and their effect on space. The structures together form a composition that organizes the site. The project also reflects Schweitzer's ability to create spaces that capitalize on limited budgets through the use of simple details and processes.

There will be additional projects in the future for the ALOHA as functional needs change providing a continuing experimental laboratory for Schweitzer's further architectural investigations.
