MORPHOSIS

Hennessey & Ingalls

Santa Monica

Photographer: TOM BONNER

The idea behind the design of the Hennessey & Ingalls bookstore in Santa Monica was to reinterpret an existing quasi-art deco building into something more abstract. A new assembly of fragments of columns, pieces of storefronts and metal gridworks simultaneously reinforces and subverts the original.

The original symmetry of the facade has been incomplete and has been violated, A steel beam emphasizes balance in juxtaposition to the existing slab-like turret.
