NARDULI & GRINSTEIN Les Deux Cafes Hollywood
Les deux Cafes is a cabaret, restaurant and garden in the heart of Hollywood. It is also a bricolage of an abandoned commercial building, a craftsman apartment house saved from demolition and a garden built in the spirit of St. Remy de Provence. THE GARDEN PHASE 1 The first phase of the project, the garden, establishes a place between the future construction site and the parking lots. As the chef geared up to operate out of the kitchen of an adjacent former youth center, the outdoor garden was built. It opened in February, 1996. The lush garden contrasts with the raw urban environment of Hollywood. THE RESTAURANT PHASE 2 The ambiance of the client's former restaurant was important. A historic craftsman apartment house, built at the turn of the century, was slated for demolition to make way for a parking lot. It had been occupied by squatters for several years. It was moved to the site between the garden and existing stucco building in June 1996. THE CABARET PHASE 3 Since its beginning as a famous Hollywood jazz club in the 1920's the woodframed red stucco building ringed by asphalt parking lots occupied the Las Palmas site. It has since housed several restaurants but has been vacant for many years. |
