Kim Zwarts is an artist who uses the camera to investigate what is 'there', both present and latent, from two distinct positions: as an architectural photographer commissioned to reveal and interpret place, and as an independent artist who sets out to reveal the place of no-place.
The photographs of the exhibition "Five California Houses" were taken over the course of 2000, concurrent with a one-year research fellowship from the Stichting Fonds voor de Beeldende Kunsten of the Netherlands awarded to Mr. Zwarts to continue his ongoing independent work in California begun nearly two decades ago.
There is (no) focal point, the photos are in focus all the way to the horizon, everything is equal. (Nor is there any) "treatment" to centre the image, and (nothing) happens. (No) occurrences but also (no) parts; (no) things that belong together or are otherwise associated, and therefore bear a mutual name: 'street', 'square', 'house', 'garden' and the such. .The subject of Zwarts images is not a Point but a Place.
Somewhere.

Background
Since the founding of Moore Ruble Yudell with Charles Moore in 1977, principals John Ruble and Buzz Yudell have built a varied body of work ranging from private residences to multi-million-dollar institutional, civic and mixed-use developments. The initial goal of Moore Ruble Yudell was to have an intensive collaboration among the principals, and as the firm has grown this idea has remained its highest priority, with the collaborative spirit extending to include project staff and clients. The principals pioneered the use of client and community workshops in the design process. Their work on a wide range of building types has given them extensive experience working with complex client groups as well as regulatory and governmental agencies.
The firm has received numerous major awards for design excellence, and in 1992 was honored by the California Council of the American Institute of Architects as Firm of the Year. Publications on Moore Ruble Yudell include the new monograph Moore Ruble Yudell: Campus and Community and three recent books: a special edition of Architecture + Urbanism (A+U), August 1992; Academy Editions' monograph Moore Ruble Yudell, published in 1993 by Ernst and Sohn; and Moore Ruble Yudell: Houses and Housing, distributed in 1994 by AIA Press.
