Michael Thomas Moran was born in California in 1951. In 1975 he received his B.A. in Sculpture from the College of Creative Studies, UCSB and in 1982 his March from the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning. From 1977 to 1979 he was an exhibition designer at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and was employed by
Frank O. Gehry & Associates from 1980 to 1985.
Since 1985 Michael Moran has been based in New York working as a freelance photographer. His work has been published in Abitare, Architectural record, Architectural review, Architecture, Progressive Architecture, A+U, Casabella, Domus, l’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, Lotus, Quaderns, Architectural Digest, Interior design, Interiors, Art Forum, Art in America, Art news, Newsweek, NY Times, Time and more.
His photographs have also been on the cover and inside several books including: The Architecture of Frank Gehry (Rizzoli 1986), The Unnatural Art of the Garden (NY, MOMA 1991), Architecture and Urbanism (NY, Japan A+U 1994), Philip Johnson’s Glass House (Japan, YKKAP 1997) and WorkLife (Monacelli Press 2000).
He is currently working on the books: Churches of Ibiza and Formentera, Barcelona, Editorial Gustavo Gili, Winter 2001/2; text by Elias Torres and Nanoarchitecture: A New Species of Architecture, NY, Princeton Architectural press, Spring 2002.
