STRESS: An Inventory of Effects
Bruce Mau, André Lepecki, Kyo Maclear. Sound by Dave Wall
30 minutes; 2000 - 2002.

Originally developed by and co-directed with André Lepecki for the Wiener Festwochen 2000 (Vienna), STRESS is a large-scale video installation made up of over twenty episodes consisting of various combinations of texts, images, multi-voiced narration and sound. Interpreting the techniques of book conceptualization and development through the medium of cinema, STRESS uses multiple digital projections to create a cinematic experience for the viewer.

Created with moving images, photo freezes, film and tape loops ranging from the openly documentary to the abstract, and made up of found historical footage, vintage stock, and logos - each episode presents a condition of the culture of stress. According to Bruce Mau, a culture that pushes the limits of social, ecological, biological, intellectual, emotional, and psychological capacity in almost every endeavor is a culture of stress.
