The Pousada de Cascais is set within the walls of the historical 16th century Citadel of Cascais fortress, one of the military forts built to defend the coast and entrance of the Tagus river. The fortress was acquired by the Cascais municipality for cultural and tourism purposes in 2003 and has now been fully converted to a luxury hotel.
