Ljubljana, Slovenia
Located on a narrow medieval street in the historic center of Ljubljana the Hotel Vander is constructed within the interior space of four adjacent historic buildings.
The ground floor space, containing the reception, restaurant and bar/lounge areas, serves as the main public part of the building.
The next three levels, organized around a vertical atrium, contains 16 hotel rooms. A hanging metal curtain on the northern wall of the atrium allows diffused light to enter the core of the building.

The interior design follows a continuous line which runs almost imperceptibly from house to house. The rooms are light and airy with mirrored partitions separating the bathrooms. A special feature of the hotel is a large rooftop terrace with a glass enclosed Yoga studio and a swimming pool.

The facades of the historic buildings have been preserved creating a totally different experience once inside the hotel where, due to the kaleidoscopic play of 3D patterns and reflections, the visitor becomes part of the interior.

During the renovation of the building, extensive archeological excavations revealed that there was once an embankment on the River in Roman times, when the town was called Emona. The embankment was reinforced with a jetty which was used as a small harbor.
Numerous finds have confirmed that tailors and shoemakers lived here in the Middle Ages. The site is one of the most significant discoveries in Ljubljana in recent years. The Vander is anchored here with a new style, but with its heart rooted in history.
