More from LA
Saturday I visited Hodgetts & Fung, Craig Hodgetts and Hsin-Ming Fung, husband and wife architects whose creative vision extends from the rough and tumble world of Harley Davidson to the pristine environment of symphonic performance. Their firm, with a staff of 20 architects and designers, is currently engaged in a range of projects which reflect their diverse taste. I will have great Features for you after Labor Day........
One project is a Student Lounge for the Art Center College of Design in Passadena; an alternative space to that of the Miesian building designed by Craig Elwood, in which all the campus activities are conducted.
The Art Center College of Design Director, Richard Koshalek, has plans to expand the College at a downtown Passadena site, with buildings by both Frank Gehry and Alvaro Siza. I will tell you more after my visit next week.
Another project is the new shell for the Hollywood Bowl; a very controversial project because of the preservationists being against the demolishment of the 71 year old shell built by Allied Architects after a 1928 design by Lloyd Wright, the eldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright.
According to an article by Nora Zamichow in the LA Times, the current shell is so small that sometimes one-third of the orchestra members are forced to sit outside the shell, where they cannot hear each other..... It is riddled with asbestos and covered with lead paint..... It leaks in the rain, warping the stage and dripping water into basement offices and dressing rooms...... Sounds like a lot of good reasons to move ahead with the new shell!
Then there is the 100,000 square feet Harley Davidson Museum scheduled to open in 2002.

P.S. Craig Hodgetts insisted I put on a piece of "prop", left over from a hip-hop photo session next door, and let him take a picture of me before I could take one of him....
