Designed for living in the 21st century
In about a week my LA sejour will be over and I will be going back to Europe my body full of solar energy and my computer full of exciting projects for future features.
Last week I visited two modern houses, John Lautner 1962 and Hagy Belzberg 1995, both perfectly suited for living in the 21st century. I was so impressed by the two houses and their detailing that I am going back to photograph both of them this week for upcoming features.

Visiting the two houses and the Craig Ellwood 1976 building for Art College of Design in Pasadena, "One of the last heroic buildings" according to Michael Maltzan, makes you realize that the modernist movement has been continuous.

My last LA appointment is a tour of the Moneo Cathedral construction site to prepare for a new Feature. I ran into Robert Graham, the artist who is designing the 30 foot tall doors for the Cathedral, who invited me to visit his studio for a closer look at the project.

P.S. One more meeting is with "X" to plan the most exciting worldwide architecture competition, sponsored by arcspace and "X", that will have 100 winners - 100 of the small houses will actually be constructed. A lot more about this in my October letter.
P.P.S. My last California image is a watercolor of the California Poppy, the State Flower, by Frances Pyle.

Frances Pyles paints local wild flowers in watercolor medium as well as "larger than life" flowers in acrylic on canvas. At the moment she is working on an illustrated taxonomy encompassing all the wildflowers, grasses, & trees from the valley floor up to the high mountain elevations.
