The winning design, to be announced in May 2004, will be the basis of NYC2012's Olympic Village proposal in the Candidature File to be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on November 15, 2004.

The proposed site of the Olympic Village is Queens West, directly across the East River from the United Nations. During the 2012 Olympic Games, it would house 16,000 athletes and coaches. Following the event, it would provide world-class residential housing for up to 18,000 New Yorkers.

Housing 16,000 athletes and coaches in 4,400 apartments, the Village will incorporate high-rise apartment buildings, townhouses, and retail and commercial space. Buildings will be grouped around playing fields, open plazas, and a broad waterfront park.

Under the plan approved by the Queens West Development Corporation, Queens West is being built as a mixed-use neighborhood with residential development consistent with the general concepts underlying NYC 2012's plans.

Financed and constructed by private developers selected by the Queens West Development Corporation, the Olympic Village would be built on the southern 17 acres of the 73-acre Queens West site, plus 17 adjacent acres. The Village would provide the neighborhood with increased retail space, additional recreational opportunities, and enhanced ferry and rail service.

After the Games, the Olympic Village's apartments will become the newest component of the Queens West neighborhood, a cornerstone of a revitalized East River waterfront.
