Hope Street Hotel

Liverpool, UK

The design combines the modern use of traditional materials with original iron columns, heavy beams and exposed brickwork.

The hotel is located in the chic Hope Street Quarter, between the city’s two cathedrals, across the street from the newly restored Philharmonic Hall.
The landmark 1860 building, in the style of a Venetian Palazzo, was originally home to the London Carriage Works - the sign is still visible in the stone.

Developed and operated by Merseyside based entrepreneurs David Brewitt, Andrew Bentley and Paul Askew, the hotel has been dramatically extended and reinterpreted by Archline design, led by Basia Chlebik.

The minimalist design by Chlebik integrates a modern use of traditional materials, wood, glass, and stone, with the building’s original features of exposed brickwork, beams and cast iron columns.

The most dramatic feature is the central oak staircase, supported by two of the largest pieces of structural oak in the UK, that runs the height of the building. A steel balustrade adds a contemporary touch.

The London Carriage Works restaurant, named after the building's first incarnation, is located on the ground floor facing Hope Street.
The open-plan space, containing a bar-brasserie, with comfortable leather sofas, and “fine dining”, is divided by a giant “glass-shard” sculpture.

The Resident’s Lounge is located in the basement, and also accessible from the street. Daylight enters through glazed skylights under the pavement.
In keeping with the concept the designers combined the massive exposed brick columns with a streamlined glass and stainless steel counter. A Steinway Grand Piano makes it a popular spot for visiting musicians.

The hotel has 48 rooms, including 7 suites - 5 of them duplexes.
Original iron columns, supporting heavy beams, line the corridors leading to the rooms.

The style is contemporary with wooden floors, king-size beds and lots of natural light. Some rooms have exposed brick walls and original beams, all have state of the art DVD players and LCD wide screen televisions, B&O telephones, and broadband access.
