Located along the Helge Creek in idyllic Southern Sweden Pappersbruket is only a two hour drive from Copenhagen and a 10 minute drive from the famous Wanås Sculpture Park.

Pappersbruket consists of an old Paper Mill and Korsvirkeshuset (the timber-frame house) from 1861, supposedly the largest timber-frame house in the north. The house and factory buildings have been carefully restored and turned into a charming hotel and conference center.

Dating back to the 18th century the Paper Mill went through an extensive renovation, which included the construction of the half-timbered house, in the middle of the 19th century. The Mill produced many types of paper and received several medals for the excellent paper that primarily was used for export.

Towards the end of the 19th century production was down, the machines could not live up to the demands, and the paper production was stopped and replaced by mechanical paper mass, and bone meal.

At the start of the 20th century the Mill once again was producing high quality paper. A railway with direct connection to the factory was built but, unfortunately, closed down again after the bridge collapsed under the train. After fighting to survive for several years the Mill was finally closed in 1981.

The three-story half-timbered house originally had an extension with a stone foundation and two stories clad with wooden strips. Here the cotton used for paper production was stored and the ready sheets of paper dried. The extension was removed in the 1940s as cotton was no longer used for paper production.

Pappersbruket was bought by the new owners in 2006 and has since been going through an extensive renovation lead by Danish artist Peter Severin and textile designer Jessica Kriesz.

Hand printed wallpaper and good design were the guidelines for the Timber House interiors by Jessica Kriesz. The framed wallpaper in the lounge and dining rooms on the ground floor are from the 19th century when the house was built. The engraved glass table tops, and the amusing windows to the kitchen, are by Peter Severin.

Framed wallpaper, depicting different periods, decorate the corridors. The beams are green on the second floor and a sunny yellow on the third floor. The light and airy rooms, furnished in simple Italian and Nordic style, overlook Helge Creek and the park.

Peter Severin, who keeps a studio in one of the buildings, has taken great care to details in restoring the old factory buildings. The sound of the old machines is gone but the atmosphere still lives in the colorful, light and spacious rooms full of contemporary art and design.

Pappersbruket has 27 rooms and several conference and meeting facilities. The food is predominantly ecological with home baked bread. The menu varies with the season and is based on nordic produce. The meat is from near by ecological farms.

Fish, row, or bathe in the creek...walk, run, or ride in the forest..play golf nearby or, if you come during the winter, get your cross country skies on.

A perfect blend of Swedish nature, good food, history, art and architecture.
